Preparing Devices for Offline Use
Forerunner allows you and your team to continue inspection workflows in areas with low or no service. Before you go out to the field, preparing your device to work offline is imperative. This process requires starting in a location with WIFI or a stable internet connection.
- Go to "Settings" at the bottom right of the screen
- Tap "Select new area to download."
- Adjust the image by zooming in/out and dragging the aerial around to ensure the box captures the whole area you expect to be working in
- Tap "Download" and name the map. Once the download is complete, you can begin working in an area of low or no service. Note: Maps expire from devices after 15 days
Utilizing Offline Mode
Offline mode will turn on automatically when there is no cellular service. We recommend turning on Airplane Mode on your device for the best performance in known low-service areas.
- If you saved multiple maps, navigate to "Settings" while in offline mode to toggle between different saved maps.
- Now, continue your workflows offline. Do not force quit and re-open the app while in Offline mode.
- When your work is complete, the data will sync to your account once you've had stable internet for 2.5 minutes. Keep the Forerunner app open and your device unlocked during this sync.
Best Practices for Offline Mode
To ensure a seamless app experience, here is a complete list of our recommended best practices:
- Prepare devices for offline mode before a storm hits so to ensure you have stable service when downloading maps
- Keep map sizes under 10MB for the best performance
- Ensure your phone has enough storage room for the downloads
- If in a low-service area, manually set your device to offline mode by turning on Airplane Mode to disable it from trying to connect to service.
- Do not force quit and re-open the app while in Offline Mode.
- When you're back online and are ready to sync inspection records, leave the app open and turn off the Auto-lock setting on the device to ensure that all records are successfully synced (even when the records were saved in online mode)
- Allow an inspection to complete syncing before clicking into it. Clicking into an inspection before a completed sync may interrupt the sync.
